* What is Dengue Fever
Dengue Fever is an acute viral infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus). The clinical manifestations can range from asymptomatic and mild fever to acute high fever with headache, posterior eye socket pain, muscle and joint pain, and rash. Based on antigenic differences, dengue virus can be divided into four serotypes. When a person is infected with one dengue serotype, the antibodies produced are only protective against the specific serotype. If the person is infected with another dengue serotype in the future, he will not be immune and may even consequently develop severer clinical symptoms.
* Epidemic in Tainan
A major dengue epidemic outbreak in Tainan City in 2015 reminded local residents of the importance of preventing vector mosquito breeding in the fight against dengue. In April 2016, the Public Health Bureau of Tainan City Government set up the dedicated "Tainan City Government Dengue Prevention And Control Center" to strengthen public health education, maintain a clean and hygienic environment, remove vector mosquito breeding sites, enforce authority, execute chemical control, and apply information technologies to simplify efforts and compile relevant data to generate reports for decision-making purposes. Thanks to the coordinated efforts between the Center and other divisions in the City Government, combined with support from the central government, experts, and researchers, dengue has since then been kept well under control in Tainan.
